Are you so focused on your vacation plans that you forget to secure your home before leaving? I know how exciting summer can be: school’s out, the sun is shining, and it’s the perfect time for road trips, flights to visit loved ones, or just relaxing at your favorite getaway. But before you pack your bags, here are a few simple steps to make sure your home stays safe while you’re away:
1. Set automatic timers for lights and TVs. One of the easiest ways to discourage unwanted visitors is to make it look like someone’s still home. I always recommend setting your indoor lights and TVs on automatic timers with staggered on and off times.
2. Secure all entry points. Before heading out, make sure every exterior door is locked with a deadbolt. Don’t forget to also set your home security system and enable your motion-sensor lighting outside to add that extra layer of protection.
3. Schedule lawn care and pause deliveries. Nothing says “no one’s home” louder than an overgrown yard. Schedule lawn care while you’re gone to keep things looking tidy, and don’t forget about the mail and newspapers. Either pause the delivery or ask a neighbor to grab them daily so they don’t pile up.
4. Designate a trusted contact. Let a friend or neighbor have limited access to your home while you’re away. Only give them the keys they need and make sure they’re aware of any plans, just in case something unexpected happens.
5. Do a final walk-through and secure everything. Turn off your water supply and water heater to avoid any leaks or damage while you’re gone. Unplug electronics like TVs, computers, and printers to protect them from summer storms and power surges. If you don’t have pets at home, raise your thermostat a few degrees to save on your electric bill. And if you have a pool, be sure to lock all gates and screen doors, especially if there are kids nearby.
There’s nothing better than fully enjoying a summer break knowing your home is safe. A few simple steps like these can help protect your property, save money, and let you truly relax, no matter how long or short your trip is.
